JIMI HENDRIX EXPANDED ‘PURPLE’ BOX SET ANNOUNCED

JIMI HENDRIX EXPANDED ‘PURPLE’ BOX SET ANNOUNCED

‘The Jimi Hendrix Experience’ box set (better known as ‘The Purple Box’) went gold and earned worldwide acclaim after its release in 2000. An expanded edition of the set, which includes four unreleased or hard-to-find tracks, will be released later this month.

The original four CDs covered Hendrix’s remarkably short career (the legendary guitarist died at the young age of 27 and released only three studio albums during his lifetime), starting with his first known recordings in October 1966 and ending with his final multi-track recording session at New York’s Electric Lady Studios in August 1970.

The new set contains everything from the 2000 release — such as alternate versions of classics like ‘Purple Haze,’ ‘Foxey Lady’ and ‘Little Wing,’ and previously unheard Hendrix music including ‘It’s Too Bad’ and ‘Country Blues’ — plus some unearthed gems die-hard fans will love.

Examples? A cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ from Hendrix’s performances at San Francisco’s Winterland in October of 1968 and the original recording of ‘Peace in Mississippi’ (recorded that same month), which was previously available only as the B-side of the 2010 ‘Valleys of Neptune’ single.

In addition, there’s a recently discovered 1967 performance of ‘Burning of the Midnight Lamp’ and the original U.K. single mix of ‘The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice.’

The shiny new version of ‘The Jimi Hendrix Experience’ box set will be released on Aug. 20. You can check out a track listing of the 56 songs on the original (and hear samples of each) on Hendrix’s official website and pre-order the expanded edition at Amazon.
